Most Americans work 8.5 hours daily. That’s one-third of our days, and most of us spend it leaning over a desk. 

That was me up until a few years ago. I’m a work-from-home parent and much of my day is spent in my home office. I used to sit hunched over, hour after hour with bad posture. But, for the past few years, I’ve spent my days on my feet and never looked back. 

So what has cutting my 9-to-5 bent back habit done for me? I’m about to tell you. 

Many of you might know my background, but for those who don’t … My wife was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, which made us reevaluate what we were putting into our bodies. We decided that a plant-based, vegan, diet was the way to go. And we took it step by step

We both saw an increase in our quality of life. In no time, my wife was able to taper off her medication. For me? Well, as an athlete who competed in races and triathlons frequently, I saw a major improvement in my athletic performance. Seeing these big results from changes in my diet grew my appreciation for a healthy way of life and making simple shifts in my habits to live life to its fullest. 

Bringing me to standing desks. I don’t have chronic back pain, but I do know that when I sit for a long time it doesn’t feel good. Going from sitting all day during my 9-to-5 to then sitting again in the mini-van dropping off kiddos, I was spending more than half my day sitting down! I also noticed minor aches and pains in my back and shoulders so I decided to give a standing desk a try. 

I thought, “I’ll just start with three hours a day. That’ll be more than a challenge.” 

Wrong–it was effortless! Before you know it, it was eight hours a day. I never felt better after a full day’s work. Some of the benefits I saw included: 

  1. I wasn’t hunched over all day, so my back and shoulders were feeling some relief. 
  2. I was also breathing better, giving my body some much-needed oxygen. 
  3. The circulation in my legs felt great. No tired feet at all. It was perfect. 

I’m not a doctor, but it seems obvious to me that humans are not meant to spend so much time sitting. I personally can attest to how this simple adjustment made me more present in meetings and gave me way more energy. Plus, no back pain, no discomfort, and no tightness. 

Best yet, using my standing desk makes me feel like a pilot in the cockpit. My chest and shoulders back, feeling truly in control like I can take over the world! 

Small lifestyle changes can go a long way when it comes to improving your health. If you’re standing all day and looking to relieve mild discomfort, then I would strongly encourage you to try a standing desk. 

Where to get started? First things first, know that there are two kinds of standing desks.  The full-size desk you might be imagining in your head right now, and also they come as sit-stand desk converters.  Converters a likely the best option for most people as they sit on top of your current desk, so you won’t have to replace your entire desk.
