There is a new obsession in your toy aisle and chances are your kids already know about it! Yo-kai Watch is the hottest thing out right now and it is causing kids to go crazy over the imaginary characters that suddenly come to life once they are activated by the special Yo-kai Watch. The story of Yo-Kai Watch centers around a young boy who gets a special watch that empowers him to discover and summon mysterious Yo-kai that help him solve problems in his daily life, usually caused by other trouble-making Yo-kai.
We had a small Yo-kai Watch party at our house and invited two of our friends over to join in on the fun. With the tv show playing and our Yo-kai Watches on, we were able to dance, sing and play by using our imagination and creativity as the Yo-kai came to life right in our living room! I have to admit, we had a blast and my kids came to life more than I have seen them in months while watching this show. Check it out:
Why It Works
As you can see from the video above, the kids love it! I did not tell them to dance or play around or anything for this video, folks. Nothing I did was rehearsed. These kids were just asked a few simple questions about how they felt about the product and then I let the DVD play and had my camera in hand. While some of the voices and sounds might be a bit much for a parent to hear at times, the benefits outweigh the small amount of irritation. Being able to play and imagine are two necessary developmental skills that every kid needs. In addition to watching the show, the kids are encouraged to be physical and innately follow along with the dance moves on the screen. I don’t know about you, but anything that gets my kids up and moving is ok in my book. Couple that with using their imagination to solve problems and create imaginary creatures, and I’m in!
What Is It?
If you already watched the video above, you have a pretty good idea of what I am talking about here, but let me break it down for you. The show is called Yo-kai Watch and the show centers around the main character who uses a Yo-kai Watch to summon the creatures called the Yo-kai. A tiny bit confusing, but this all makes total sense to the kids. The watch itself you can find in any toy store. It will come with a few discs that have different characters on them. Once you put a disc in the watch, the sound will start and the respective character on the disc will say a few things to your child. The goal is to collect as many discs as you can (sold separately) and watch the show to let your imagination run wild!
Where To Watch
You can catch the show on television on Disney XD. You can also visit the Yo-kai Watch YouTube channel to get all the songs on demand. There are also some episode snippets and other fun stuff. In addition to watching, the QR code on the back of each medal can be scanned with the in-game camera on the Nintendo 3DS system and the player can acquire an in-game coin. The game allows users to discover more than 200 Yo-kai and befriends them and turn them into a team to battle other Yo-kai. Finally, there is an app for iOS and Android users! The Yo-kai Watch Land App is now available for download in the app store and allows users to explore bios of over 200 Yo-kai, take pictures with them in the Photo Booth and watch their medals come to life!
Make sure to follow all your favorite Yo-Kai on their official facebook page!
As you can imagine, there are lots of things to collect in relation to Yo-kai. That’s the fun part. There is a Medallium Collection Book, Yo-kai Watch Plush Figures, Extra character discs and of course the actual Yo-kai Watch itself. They are all pretty darn affordable and make a great birthday gift or incentive reward for the little Yo-kai fans in your house!
